The Types of Web Hosting

There are 4 different types of web hosting available – shared, virtual private server or VPS, dedicated hosting, and cloud hosting.

  • Shared Hosting – Shared hosting means that you will be sharing the hosting with other websites. So, your website is using the same server as the other websites (the number of websites may be from one to a few thousand websites). Usually, all websites may share a server and other server resources such as the CPU and the RAM. The biggest advantage of using shared hosting is the low cost.
  • VPS Hosting – VPS hosting or virtual private server is a type of hosting that divides the server into a few virtual servers where each site is hosted on a dedicated server. The websites are again sharing a virtual server with a few different other websites. The advantage is that users have a better and more secure hosting environment.
  • Dedicated Hosting – A dedicated hosting means that your website is the only website that is hosted on the server. With dedicated hosting, you have more control over the server which is a huge advantage. The disadvantage of using this type of hosting is the cost. The dedicated hosting is much more expensive than the shared hosting and the VPS hosting. They are recommendable for individuals and business organizations who need maximum control of the server and an improved server performance.
  • Cloud Hosting – This type of hosting provides unlimited ability to handle high website traffic. The cloud hosting works in a simple way – there is a team of servers known as cloud and they work together in order to host a group of several websites. The cloud hosting allows various computers to work together in order to handle high website traffic. The disadvantage of the cloud hosting is that there is not root access and the cost is expensive.
